Just spotted that the folks at SEOmoz.org have published their Web2.0 awards for 2007.

With over 200 Web2.0 sites mentioned I have found this to be a very valuable link last year, as I do this year and I highly would recommend the bookmark.

Peter does scalability and thought of the day?

My good friend Peter Van Dijck has a excellent post (even if I want to make fun of it) that covers his research on how others have talked about scalability. The blog entry can be found at this link.

I would highly recommend you bookmark the link(s).

ps

<Thought of the day>

For all of the good that MS does in the community, I do wonder sometimes why they(/MS) leave themselves so open to the question that their stack cannot work on an internet scale? MySpace.com presentations aside (see Mix07 presentation) , where is the MS community love for those that want to build at infinite scale? Why leave the questions so open and those that want to push the boundaries so exposed/uncertain?

R ye guys listening? ;)

Irish Microsoft Developer Community - WCF Survey - We would love your feedback on WCF/WF topics

Hi All,

         Just a short note to say hi! No I have not fallen off the face of the earth and yes I have been lagging on being involved in the Irish developer community for way too long, Mea Culpa to all involved especially the folks that run all of great UG's here in Ireland.

As many of you may already know, many folks have been given their free time to get the new MTUG.ie web site up and running, with many aims and plans, we first want to have this as a place where all of the Irish Microsoft Developer Community Events (across all of Ireland, North and South) can be centrally published (and known to all), where we can solicit feedback for folks and better understand what events/sessions are of most interest to folks.

For example, over the last very events/sessions we have had here in Ireland, we have had MANY, MANY requests in the feedback forms for sessions on WCF and Windows Workflow. To help best understand what topics and levels folks want the sessions to focus, we have created a survey on MTUG.ie (located at http://www.damtug.mtug.ie/).

Please help us better understand what sessions would be of use and interest to you, so that we know if I (or are folks sick of hearing me talk about WCF/WF) or the many, many folks that would love to come to Ireland and talk about (and share) their own experience and insight into WCF and WF.

Please feel free to pass on the link to the survey, suggest partical topics not covered in the survey in the comments below, or suggest any areas/regions  that would like a particular session (again in the comments below, as we not have covered topics folks are interested in).

 /Paul

.NET 3.0 RC1 and WCF RC1 installation issues and lessons on Googling (doh!!)

Since I have been banging my head against the keyboard for a few hour this morning trying to get .NET 3.0 RC1 to install - and since it took me so long to resolve what the issue was - I thought I would blog about it and hopeful make the answers more easy for folks to find on Google :)

In my particular case I was having an issue with the WCF part of the .NET 3.0 RC1 installation process, but I did know that at first and I had to do some digging!

So firstly how did I know it was WCF?

I have found what is typically a good thing to try first (after looking at the event viewer etc.. of course) is to look for a "return value 3" in the log files that the installer creates. Now this value is as vague as they come and is a general error (afaik), but at least it gave me a hint that it was the WCF installation that was acting up, cause of the following lines that were about the "return value 3" in the logs, i.e.

MSI (s) (A0:A4) [11:02:43:406]: Executing op: RegAddValue(Name=Counter Names,Value=#x4d006500730073006100670065002000730065006e00640020006600610069006c00750072
MSI (s) (A0:A4) [11:02:43:406]: Executing op: ActionStart(Name=DD_CA_InstallXwsRegExe_RB_X86.3643236F_FC70_11D3_A536_0090278A1BB8,,)
MSI (s) (A0:A4) [11:02:43:406]: Executing op: CustomActionSchedule(Action=DD_CA_InstallXwsRegExe_RB_X86.3643236F_FC70_11D3_A536_0090278A1BB8,

Source=BinaryData,Target=QuietExec,CustomActionData=
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.0\Windows Communication Foundation\ServiceModelReg.exe /u /x /y /v;dummy;C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\)
MSI (s) (A0:A4) [11:02:43:406]: Executing op: ActionStart(Name=DD_CA_InstallXwsRegExe_X86.3643236F_FC70_11D3_A536_0090278A1BB8,,)
MSI (s) (A0:A4) [11:02:43:406]: Executing op: CustomActionSchedule(Action=DD_CA_InstallXwsRegExe_X86.3643236F_FC70_11D3_A536_0090278A1BB8,
ActionType=3073,
Source=BinaryData,Target=QuietExec,CustomActionData=
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.0\Windows Communication Foundation\ServiceModelReg.exe /r /x /y /v;dummy;C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\)
MSI (s) (A0:98) [11:02:43:421]: Invoking remote custom action. DLL: C:\WINDOWS\Installer\MSI164.tmp, Entrypoint: QuietExec
MSI (s) (A0:FC) [11:02:43:421]: Generating random cookie.
MSI (s) (A0:FC) [11:02:43:421]: Created Custom Action Server with PID 4576 (0x11E0).
MSI (s) (A0:CC) [11:02:43:437]: Running as a service.
MSI (s) (A0:CC) [11:02:43:437]: Hello, I'm your 32bit Elevated custom action server.
MSI (s) (A0:A4) [11:02:44:796]: User policy value 'DisableRollback' is 0
MSI (s) (A0:A4) [11:02:44:796]: Machine policy value 'DisableRollback' is 0
Action ended 11:02:44: InstallFinalize. Return value 3.

So if you look at the lines in red, you will see that it failed on calling ServiceModelReg (aka the DD_CA_InstallXwsRegExe_X86.3643236F_FC70_11D3_A536_0090278A1BB8 action). Still not a lot of details, right! But at least something to work with and a step in the right direction.

Now this is where I had the most frustration (and stupidity on my part)! My Google skills let me down! I started the morning looking/Googling for ".NET 3.0 RC1 installation issues" (and variations there of) and that got me no where. Then when I discovered the details above I started looking/Googling for "ServiceModelReg install issues" (and variations there of).

All of my problems would have been solved if I had just done "WCF RC1 installation issues" and found Craig McLuckie's MSDN forum entry, but in fairness it took me a while to figure out it was WCF and even then I was not using the right key words in Google to find this article?

Anyways, if you are having issues with installing .NET 3.0 RC 1, the text above should be a good general purpose set of tips on how to narrow it down. Of course reading the read me, looking in the event viewer etc.. should all be tried first. And in the case that it turns out to be an issue with WCF, then this forum entry is a good resource to have.

hope this helps,

/Paul

PS

If ye guys are watching, as a suggestion, how about placing this very useful entry on the NetFx3 announcement section or having it as a pinned post on the WCF forums like this forum post.

Hear the creators of Python and PHP

The folks at FLOSS have done an excellent job with their podcasts as always, hear the two podcasts from the creators of Python and PHP

I particularly liked the part where Rasmus discusses the differences between scale and performance and how they are two different things. In my view (and a big industry problem), all too often the word scalability is bounced around in a context that is not relevant or applicable.

The one observation is that its a pity he did not discuss more about productivty, but hey he covered most of the bases including security etc…

Highly recommend.A big thanks to Chris and Leo.

Is Metcalfe's Law Wrong? Is there no (or less) network effects in the long tail or social networking?

In a recent IEEE Spectrum articule, Bob Briscoe, Andrew Odlyzko, and Benjamin Tilly proposed that Metcalfe's Law is wrong, see this IEEE article for details. Its an interesting read, but despite the articulate argument I think of MySpace, Google, YouTube, Ebay et. al. and how the hitting the tipping point of critical mass has led to the explosive growth we see with this sites and this is through the network effects as I see it.

Anyways, over here you can hear Metacalf’s respone to the article as he explains the history of the 25 year old law and how it can be applied to todays social networks and network effects.

Microsoft and a RSS platform???

Talk about timing? I was just wondering where MS was going (in relation to the RSS/Syndication toolkit/platform/market) and whether they would be building a “platform” (aka a toolkit) and when (i.e. sooner the better in my view, aka NOW!!)…….

and then …..

I see that Niall Kennedy is to leave MS?

No comment, just walking away from the keyboard and silently shaking my head. I honestly thought that MS was starting to get it? Perhaps in 18–24 months or so!!! when the world has changed again? any remember SOAP?

<jesturing and waving hands at MS>

All I want is a “Web2.0 toolkit” folks? Not a “platform”!! I’m not alone and we have needs! and we want them now!!

</jesturing and waving hands at MS>

/Paul

ps

btw, I know about the WCF RSS toolkit, but thats falls very short of the mark in my view! (Sorry to the folks involved)

Google Porn? Porn 2.0?

Old news I know, but I just had to comment on Google moving into the Adult search arena.

Maybe its just me, being a ex-Web1.0’er, but for me it again shows how the money is where the base instincts lie. One of the biggest drivers of Web tech stacks is the porn industry after all!! and Sex sells!!

Maybe this marks the birth of Porn 2.0
