The folks at FLOSS have done an excellent job with their podcasts as always, hear the two podcasts from the creators of Python and PHP

I particularly liked the part where Rasmus discusses the differences between scale and performance and how they are two different things. In my view (and a big industry problem), all too often the word scalability is bounced around in a context that is not relevant or applicable.

The one observation is that its a pity he did not discuss more about productivty, but hey he covered most of the bases including security etc…

In a recent IEEE Spectrum articule, Bob Briscoe, Andrew Odlyzko, and Benjamin Tilly proposed that Metcalfe's Law is wrong, see this IEEE article for details. Its an interesting read, but despite the articulate argument I think of MySpace, Google, YouTube, Ebay et. al. and how the hitting the tipping point of critical mass has led to the explosive growth we see with this sites and this is through the network effects as I see it.

Anyways, over here you can hear Metacalf’s respone to the article as he explains the history of the 25 year old law and how it can be applied to todays social networks and network effects.

Talk about timing? I was just wondering where MS was going (in relation to the RSS/Syndication toolkit/platform/market) and whether they would be building a “platform” (aka a toolkit) and when (i.e. sooner the better in my view, aka NOW!!)…….

I see that Niall Kennedy is to leave MS?

No comment, just walking away from the keyboard and silently shaking my head. I honestly thought that MS was starting to get it? Perhaps in 18–24 months or so!!! when the world has changed again? any remember SOAP?

Old news I know, but I just had to comment on Google moving into the Adult search arena.

Maybe its just me, being a ex-Web1.0’er, but for me it again shows how the money is where the base instincts lie. One of the biggest drivers of Web tech stacks is the porn industry after all!! and Sex sells!!

It makes one wonder when you hear that WinFS is to fade into non-existence? 2+ years of mud slinging about the delays with Vista and Longhorn in general, and then the announcement comes that one of the big ticket items that has been lagging for ages is now no longer going to ship as a seperate product!

I especially found the news to be extremely interesting as they were talking about the upcoming release of WinFS Beta 2 at TechEd at few weeks ago? huh?

.NET Framework 3.0 - June 2006 CTP has just been released, which also includes a RC for Windows Workflow Foundation.

Also, its seems while it's not a final WCF RC1 build it does incorporate all the final programming model tweaks that have been planned since/post Beta2.

Here’s a bit of a mind bender, has the network effect or the power law hit distributed computing? And hit it in an unusual way? And in a way that no one talks about?

The reason I ask, is well ……. have a look at this beast from HP! Does it not change lots of things in distributed computing?  

If you were to buy this beast, what type of distributed computing are doing and how does it match up to the box?

If you don’t buy this beast! Are you doing a totally different type of distributed computing?

Has the network effect on Distributed computing created a two tier system of distributed architectures at its highest level? Is the Web the new enterprise?

Is this a tipping point for the 2–way web? Has it now become as important to engage with the grass roots as it is to engage with those that offically/historally spread “the word”? Interesting times ahead, and even more interesting by how MS has choosen to do it?
